🔥 why visibility feels like a threat

Reader,

You don’t just get “nervous” before you post online or go live - you experience a full-body alarm, as if your ancestor just watched a saber-tooth jump out from the bushes.

Last month, I scheduled a 2 PM livestream and spent the hour beforehand replaying a childhood friend telling me “no one cares what you think.”

By the time I clicked “Go Live,” my chest was pounding, my vision tunnelled, and my throat locked shut - classic fight-or-flight hijack.

Yes, things come up for me daily even though I show up daily.

I have doubts just like all of you.

I have had to create systems to pull myself out of the “muck” and into the “I don’t give a fuck!”

Here’s what you haven’t realized: your amygdala isn’t just guarding you from spiders and snakes.

note: unless you’re in Australia because I had to watch out for these things and more out there for a year.

It’s cataloged every moment you felt exposed - being called out in class, mocked at lunch, left hanging on a group text - as proof that visibility equals danger.

That means when you sit down to record, your nervous system replays those exact survival memories:

  • Dorsal shutdown: You freeze mid-sentence, your screen goes black, and you bail.
  • Sympathetic spike: You ramble breathlessly, your voice cracks, and you feel the shame rush in.
  • Window of tolerance collapse: You spin into self-critique or defensiveness - anywhere but presence.

Deep Insight: Visibility isn’t a marketing tactic, it’s a neurosomatic skill. Until you literally rewire your body’s threat response, every “post” or “pitch” will feel like standing blindfolded in a doomsday hailstorm.

Your 3-Minute Somatic Reboot:

  1. Anchor: Sit tall, feet flat, hands on your thighs - grounding through your ischial tuberosities.
  2. Track: Scan from skull to pelvis and silently name each sensation (“heat…freeze…tightness…”).
  3. Interrupt: On your next exhale, imagine a gentle wave washing through that hotspot - dissolving the old memory (or memories).
  4. State-Set: Whisper to yourself in a low, calm tone: “I am safe to be seen.” Repeat until your system softens.

That moment of inner safety is your neural “go-ahead” signal - only after it fires can you step into the light without tripping your own alarm.
